THE SCHOOL

BEMS is a private English-medium school that offers an affordable and high-quality alternative to the local public schools. Unlike public schools, which typically offer only one English-taught class, all subjects at BEMS are delivered in English, ensuring students gain a solid foundation for higher education and numerous future opportunities.

Our curriculum includes Kiswahili, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Civics, and Vocational Skills, fostering a well-rounded education. In the pre-school program, each class is guided by a single teacher, while in the primary school, subject-specific teachers provide specialized instruction across all grade levels.

Beyond academics, BEMS offers a variety of enriching extracurricular activities, such as subject clubs, debate classes, cleaning initiatives, religious studies, and sports and games. By combining diverse teaching methods with engaging activities, BEMS cultivates a lifelong passion for learning, knowledge, and discovery in every student.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our mission to educate the community and promote better lifestyles extends far beyond operating the Bright English Medium School for children. Recognizing that school is only one aspect of a child’s life, we also prioritize advocating for the importance of education among parents and the broader community in Loliondo, Wasso, and Sakala. To ensure we approach this responsibly, we have been formally registered as a community organization with the Tanzanian government for several years. This allows us to coordinate with government authorities, notify them of our visits, and ensure that our efforts are sustainable and impactful.

Over the last decade, we are proud to have witnessed significant progress in the communities we serve. Initially, many parents were reluctant to send their children to school, preferring that their sons work with livestock and their daughters marry at a young age. However, through persistent efforts, we have seen tremendous growth, with more and more children now receiving an education.

Our outreach program is built on consistency, with visits to communities at least every two weeks. We believe that regular follow-ups and ongoing education yield the most effective results. The months of November and December are particularly critical as we focus on encouraging parents to enroll their children in school for the upcoming academic year starting in February. Importantly, our advocacy for education extends beyond BEMS, as we acknowledge that not all families can afford private school fees. For this reason, we actively support children in attending other schools in the region and remain deeply committed to ensuring their education continues.

In these 10 years, we have engaged with nearly all the dispersed Maasai communities in the region, fostering relationships, exchanging cultural perspectives, and promoting the value of education for all. Many of these communities are in remote areas, with limited prior interaction with people outside their circles. Because of this, our efforts often introduce new and unfamiliar ideas. We begin by building trust and understanding within families and communities, learning as much as we can about their way of life. Once this foundation is established, we conduct workshops to emphasize the importance of education and address cultural beliefs and practices. These workshops cover critical topics such as gender equality, the dangers of female genital mutilation, and other practices that have caused harm, particularly to women in Maasai communities.

Through this holistic and respectful approach, we continue to support sustainable change, advocating for education while honoring the unique cultural identities of the communities we serve.
